Он стал одним из первых музыкантов, кто сумел выйти за пределы джазовой аудитории и заинтересовать действительно широкую публику. Его квартет стал площадкой для смелых экспериментов: здесь родился легендарный альбом «Time Out» (1959), где классические джазовые структуры были смещены необычными размерами — 5/4 в «Take Five», 9/8 в «Blue Rondo a la Turk».
